Bicyculture / Bicicultura

Bicyculture/Bicicultura is a bilingual, bicultural, bicycle education program designed to promote multi-modal transportation by empowering underserved individuals, families and youth to safely and legally operate a bicycle on public streets while integrating the public transportation systems to plan safe routes of travel. The program introduces participants to the built environment’s impact - for better or worse - on public health and safety while encouraging public participation in the development of safer and more sustainable communities.

Bicyculture combines hands-on, interactive learning with practical information for real-world application. The program consists of 5 modules to be completed over 10 hours of instruction. Program Modules consist of:
  1. Introduction Active Transportation - Introduction to bicycling and walking as a low-cost, effective and sustainable form of active transportation that is capable of preventing or reversing many social and environmental detractors such as obesity, accident rates and carbon emissions.
  2. Bicycle Laws & Safety - Introduction to bicycle related laws and safety pursuant to the California Vehicle Code: Operation of a Bicycle.  Provides basic safety instruction, tips and tricks for riding etiquette, group rides, night rides, taking lanes and avoiding flat tires.
  3. Planning Safe Routes of Travel - Learn to plan safe routes of travel via bicycle and public transportation by understanding how to read maps, legends, bikeways and transit itineraries.
  4. Bike Anatomy, Maintenance & Repair - Introduction to basic bike anatomy, routine maintenance and simple repairs such as patching a tube, fixing a flat, and making minor sizing, brake and derailleur adjustments.
  5. Built Environments & Civic Engagement - Introduction to a built environment’s impact on public health and safety.  Learn to navigate the civic process for creating a healthier, safer and more sustainable community.

BikeSGV offers various implementation options to suit the needs of the target audience.
  1. Weekdays: Ideal for school districts or day-care centers, the program meets during after school hours, Monday through Friday for 2 hours each day.
  2. Weekends: Ideal for community centers or faith based organizations, the program meets Saturdays and Sundays for 5 hours each day.
  3. Custom: Ideal for conferences, retreats, summits, etc., the program is tailored to the needs of the agency.

A series of incentives have been equated into the program to encourage active participation. Beyond receiving a program manual, each participant will have an opportunity to earn bicycle tools and accessories that corresponds with each module. Other incentives include helmets, lights, locks, maps, patch kits, water bottles, reflectors and much more. All who successfully complete the program checklist will earn a Certificate of Completion and qualify to participate in a drawing for a new folding bicycle among other prizes.
